  • Sydney: State Library NSW Metcalfe Auditorium March 14 Sunday at 2pm. The Circus (1928). 72 minutes with soundtrack. ” In the last film he made during the silent era, Charlie Chaplin revels in the art of the circus, paying tribute to the acrobats and pantomimists who inspired his virtuoso pratfalls. After being mistaken for a pickpocket, Chaplin’s Tramp flees into the ring of a travelling circus and soon becomes the star of the show, falling for the troupe’s bareback rider along the way. Despite its famously troubled production, this gag-packed comedy ranks among Chaplin’s finest, thanks to some of the most audacious set pieces of the director-performer’s career, including a close brush with a lion and a climactic tightrope walk with a barrelful of monkeys. The Circus, which was rereleased in 1969 with a new score by Chaplin, is an uproarious high-wire act that showcases silent cinema’s most popular entertainer at the peak of his comic powers.” New 4K digital restoration of Charlie Chaplin’s 1969 rerelease version of the film, featuring an original score by Chaplin. Along the way, they meet a young aborigine on his “walkabout,” a rite of passage in which adolescent boys are initiated into manhood by journeying into the wilderness alone. • Sydney: State Library NSW Metcalfe Auditorium January 26 Sunday at 2pm. Malcolm (1986). Australia and the Silver Screen. 85 minutes with soundtrack. “Nadia Tass’s Malcolm was originally released in 1986 and struck a national chord with the Australian public as a genuine expression of offbeat Australian humour. This charming comedy is the story of slow-witted Malcolm (Colin Friels) a young man with a genius for mechanical devices. When Malcolm loses his job as a conductor – for building his own tram – he meets Frank (John Hargreaves) a man with a shady past who moves in to help Malcolm pay the bills. Cue Malcolm’s unusual entry into a life of crime. Assisted by Frank, and the remote control tinker toys he once used to pick up milk from the corner shop, Malcolm lays his plans to pull off the heist of the century…. Accompanied by an infectious music score, you can again witness the magical combination invention and true originality that saw Malcolm win 8 AFI Awards, including Best Film, in 1986.” Tickets $25/ $20 at the website home page right hand side or call 0419 267 318. • Sydney: State Library NSW Metcalfe Auditorium December 1 Sunday at 2pm. The Holly and the Ivy (1952), a festive season gem. “The Holly And The Ivy is a charming and moving seasonal favourite, peaking with the family’s poignant reconciliation as they re-discover the true spirit of Christmas. This Christmas classic also stars Celia Johnson (Brief Encounter, The Captain’s Paradise), Margaret Leighton (The Winslow Boy, The Go-Between) and Denholm Elliott (A Room with a View).” “For all those who think that the ultimate Christmas films are IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE and WHITE CHRISTMAS, take a look at this remarkable and uplifting tale of a country parson, and revel in the sheer quality of the writing, the directing, and the superlative performances from a five-star cast. The script is faithfully and carefully distilled from a successful stage play of the 1950s – but the adaptation has none of that cardboard quality that is sometimes a pitfall of putting theatre onto the screen. Celia Johnson, Ralph Richardson, Margaret Leighton, a young Denholm Elliott, and a supporting cast of remarkable talent unfold this bittersweet but ultimately joyous story set in the claustrophobic confines of a country vicarage.” Tickets $25/ $20 at the website home page right hand side or call 0419 267 318.
