Essential works across 1910-1930s spanning a cinema canon or should that be cannon? Whether an audience has already seen these feature films, is planning to or simply cares about the importance and power of cinema, the discussion, insights and shared ideas should begin.

These short video presentations aim to stimulate interest in the silent era and offer a guide containing entry points for the curious.

Part 1 covers a selection only of classic features from the 1910s to 1930s. There are a number of short silent masterpieces and they will form another set of presentations. Many more surviving silent classics will be added with introductions. Part 1 introduces truly great early cinema, from many genres, which possess timeless popularity and enduring value. Most of the listed items can be accessed through various digital editions, hard copy media or streaming, and at times via a helpful cinema or festival. This widening of access in the 21st century allows more people to savour these silent masterpieces.

This series is dedicated in memory of early cinema colossus and Mutual Friend, David Shepard (1940-2017).
